February 22, 2007 - Mobile Tailor

Still in front of the monkey show… this man passed by with his portable sewing machine. He stopped a few seconds to check out the monkey as well. If you have been around Jakarta DP for quite some time, you might recognized the word on that green box which says Vermak Levis. It was similar to one of my posts in April 2006.Š

February 20, 2007 - Topeng Monyet

Following yesterday’s post, here is the answer to their curiousity. They were watching at one talented monkey. This door to door circus show is called Topeng Monyet. They put on the show for around five to ten thousand rupiahs or about US$1.00. The monkey is trained to do a few smart moves. Kids always have fun watching it although some might be a little scared.

If Edwin wrote in KLDP: Kong Hei Fatt Choy, people here in Jakarta write it down as Gong Xi Fa Cai. However you write it, Happy Chinese New Year to all who celebrate! I didn’t get a chance to take any photos related to it, but I’m happy to know that all Chinese people in Indonesia now have freedom to celebrate… and freedom to be. Indonesian’s philosophy of being a nation with many cultural and religion differences, is not merely words now. Well, almost… bureaucracy still sucks in some places! There’s a small article in The Jakarta Post which described about how it was like for Chinese Indonesian a few years back.
